Perspectives from Times Square

The goal of this project was to represent Times Square from various perspectives all in over the course of an hour. Perspectives from Times Square represents various moments in time and different people seen as well as advertisements. It also shows my evolving ideas and associations with NYC and how much more I discover each time I visit this vast city.

Light on Objects:

My aim for this project was to show a close up view of how light reflects off everyday objects, such as the natural light coming from a window that reflects off of the tea cup. I also wanted to contrast natural versus artificial light on objects. This is shown through the upward view of the lamp and lamp post outside in the rain. In this image the circular spots, created by raindrops on the lens, give the image a serene feel and almost look like small halos. They could also be viewed as large stars in the night sky, adding to a celestial feel. On another note, one thing that ties all of my images together is the theme of light sparkling off the objects. For instance, in my closeup of a metallic frame there was a spotlight on it creating a reflective shine. I also played on the theme of repetition especially in the image of the apples with all of the white sparkly looking dots, and in the decorative, glass bowls. This theme is also apparent in the crystal beads of the chandelier which repeat in a regular pattern.

Portrait Project:

For this portrait project, I explored the idea of indoor photography and what someone’s personal space or room can reveal about them. The viewer is able to interpret what they see from these people based on their expressions and space. The viewer may also get a sense of the subject being raw and open with no fluff and no mask of a smile or makeup. Deeper emotions can be revealed through these raw expressions. My intent in the portraits of my friend Maddy was to show her in her space at home without any filters, such as fancy clothes or makeup. I wanted to show her true self and convey that it is okay if you are not perfect. It also conveys her insecurities and inner world that most people would not know about her. The viewer may also get a sense of loneliness and being trapped in your home, or being trapped inside your head or inner world. The blank weekly calendar shows her being bored with the mundane everyday life.
